With the upcoming album "The Last Best Place" (Review Here) the American composer John Hayes has delivered a timeless piece of sound art. Just like the debut album "By The Woods" two years ago. But there is currently a difficult time in the world, which also affects musicians and composers. In an interview, John tells about his new album, how he is currently dealing with the crisis situation and why he loves classical music from Germany.

Hello John, nice that you have time. How are you doing right now?
Hi, Andre, I seem to be having quite a bit of time on my hands these days. I am doing well. I hope you are safe and staying healthy.
Before we talk about the new album - these are chaotic times right now. How do you see the whole thing with shutdowns and restrictions?
Everything is pretty upside down right now isn’t it? It is quite strange. Six months ago, we were all packed in at local bars, shoulder to shoulder at concerts, and enjoying each other's company. Today if we come within 6 feet of a stranger it is a bit unsettling! I hope we get back to some sense of normality sooner rather than later. For the time being though, we are separated. Maybe this will give us some time for introspection, who knows.
What is the situation like at your home, in your state? How do your friends and family deal with the Corona crisis?
Minnesota (my home) is in the middle of the country (U.S.) and borders Canada. We have not been hit as hard as places like New York and Los Angeles, however, we have been under lockdown since late March. It is hard to keep track of days right now if I am being honest. Everyone here is staying inside and doing their best to not contribute to the spread. It is becoming a bit harder to stay inside right now with the beautiful spring we are having.
What are you missing most in these times?
A lot of things! I am quite the introvert and initially thought that I wouldn’t miss much during the lockdown. As it turns out, there are quite a few things we take for granted when we give them no thought in our day to day lives.

Enough about it, let's talk about the language of passion - music. You discovered the piano at the age of 12. Why exactly this instrument?
I really didn’t have much say in the matter. It was my parents’ choice to have me start playing the piano. It seemed to be just a part of everyday life growing up, come home from school, homework, then the piano. Surprisingly, I was not fond of playing the piano around this time. I would have much rather been outside playing baseball or running around with friends. After a few years of lessons though, I think my joy from creating started around then. During practice time, I would always be trying to come up with my own tunes or trying to recreate a melody I had heard from a movie I had seen the night before. This led to many awkward lessons where it was apparent, I had not been practicing my assigned material and in turn, quite a bit of frustration on my teachers' end. I eventually dropped out of formal lessons.
You are a passionate composer. How did it come about, was there a certain key moment or how did that come about?
I’m not sure it was a specific moment really. After I dropped out of lessons, I spent a few years away from the piano but still was making music. At college, I would produce little hip-hop beats for my friends with some software I got through the school. It was nothing too serious, but I would spend countless hours working on them. I started to come back to the piano towards the end of school and that's when I finally started recording ideas for an album. I think it took a good amount of time and some courage to finally be ready to share my music.
A quote from you is "I love music from Germany, it has a big influence on my own music." Please explain this in more detail.
Many of my favorite artists are from Germany. There seems to be something in the water over there. From Beethoven, Brahms, and Bach to current artists like Nils Frahm and Hans Zimmer, they all have had a big influence on me. Not just with their music, but also their attitude and how they approach music and art in general.
At the end of 2018, I listed the album “By The Woods” in the category “Musical reference of neoclassical”. When you read something like that, what's going through your mind?
I must say, that was quite the honor. It is always nice to see your hard work is appreciated. Thank you!
The album was reinterpreted by renowned and well-known musicians in 2019. How did this step come about? And how honored do you feel when something like this happens?
I brought the idea up to Kyle McEvoy (the head of Sonder House Records) a few months after By The Woods was released. It was something I had been thinking about doing since the conception of By The Woods. When I talked to Kyle about it, he loved the idea and things moved pretty quickly from there. I felt incredibly grateful so many great artists hopped on board right away. So many fantastic reinterpretations on that record.
The new album “The Last Best Place” will be released in May. Please tell me something about the history. Please tell me which piece you had to sand for a very long time and which title you put on the music paper almost immediately?
The Last Best Place was quite an unexpected album for me. After By The Woods I wasn’t planning on making another solo piano record. I have such an interest in electronic and ambient music, I really believed that would be the route I would take for my next record. With that being said, I am always playing my piano and writing little melodies on it. After a while, I realized that I had quite a bit of material that I was really pleased with and decided to sit down and record them all. The title The Last Best Place is a tribute to the nickname for the state of Montana. My good friend, who this album is dedicated to, passed away last summer and loved spending time there. His passing is really what prompted me to release the album. The song Anonymous is one that I have been playing even around the time By The Woods came out. For some reason or another, I could never really record a take that I liked so it never made its way on to anything until now.
I have certainly heard the album a few times now, for me it is - timeless piano romance. Does the album also reflect an image of your soul and your heart? To what extent?
The title track, The Last Best Place, was written for one of my friends who I mentioned above. I originally wrote the song to calm my nerves from the anxiety I was having from his passing. Again, this is what really inspired me to record the whole album. It is a very personal record and I wanted that intimacy and care to translate into the recordings which for me, it has. Hopefully, the listeners will feel that as well.
Unfortunately, I can not emphasize any song, All 11 pieces have a deep magic. Where do you get the creativity and inspiration from when composing these pieces?
For this record, all the ideas came from simply sitting at the piano, improvising, and playing around with little ideas. I try not to overthink things too much and just pay attention to myself when I am playing. Am I getting lost in the atmosphere? Am I being moved by the notes I am striking? These are things I really try to pay attention to. From there it is just about trusting my instincts, the piano will do the rest of the work.

Tell us, what is your personal “Last Best Place”?
There are a few lakes around my place that I like to bike and run around. I would consider that my Last Best Place.
You are in the genre of modern classic - how do you think it will develop? More modern approaches or back to the roots?
You know it is hard to tell. I feel like it is this wheel that keeps spinning, right now I think it is trending towards more modern approaches but in a few years, it will be back to the basics again.
How is a John Hayes private?
I do tend to be more private. I’ve always been the most intrigued by artists that maintain a sense of privacy and mysteriousness. I think there is a quality to that all on its own.
What exactly can the press, editors or journalists do to make them or your music more popular?
I think that is quite up to them and how they want to cover my releases. At the end of the day, I hope they enjoy it enough to write kind words about it but I also would never be one to tell them how to do their job! Hopefully, the music speaks for itself and the writers feel that.
Are you tracking your colleagues' publication? Which album has impressed you most recently?
If I am being honest, I have been staying away from listening to too much in the genre lately, there is just so much to keep track of. I hope that doesn't sound harsh! I've just found that the more I pay attention to what other people are doing, the more it distracts me from working on my own music and vision. I’ve noticed when I start following closely, I feel more pressure to do this or that and start comparing myself to other artists which is not a healthy thing to do. Comparison is the killer of creativity as they say. I really try to just stay in my own lane for the most part. My favorite release this year though would have to be Blomma by my good friends Jacob Pavek and Philip Daniel.

Im Moment ist alles ziemlich verkehrt herum, oder? Es ist ziemlich seltsam. Vor sechs Monaten waren wir alle in örtlichen Bars, Schulter an Schulter bei Konzerten und genossen die Gesellschaft des anderen. Heute, wenn wir innerhalb von 6 Fuß von einem Fremden kommen, ist es ein bisschen beunruhigend! Ich hoffe, wir kehren eher früher als später zu einem Gefühl der Normalität zurück. Vorerst sind wir jedoch getrennt. Vielleicht gibt uns das etwas Zeit für Selbstbeobachtung, wer weiß?
Wie ist die Lage bei Dir zu Hause, in deinem Bundesstaat? Wie gehen deine Freunde, Familie mit der Corona-Kriese damit um?

Ein außergewöhnlixher Komponist mit Seele: John Hayes.
Genug darüber, lass uns über die Sprache der Leidenschaft reden - Musik. Mit 12 Jahren hast du das Klavier entdeckt. Warum genau dieses Instrument?
Ich hatte wirklich nicht viel zu sagen. Es war die Entscheidung meiner Eltern, mich Klavier spielen zu lassen. Es schien nur ein Teil des Alltags zu sein, als ich aufwuchs, von der Schule nach Hause kam, Hausaufgaben machte, dann Klavier. Überraschenderweise spielte ich um diese Zeit nicht gern Klavier. Ich wäre viel lieber draußen gewesen, um Baseball zu spielen oder mit Freunden herumzulaufen. Nach ein paar Jahren Unterricht denke ich, dass meine Freude am Schaffen damals begann. Während der Übungszeit versuchte ich immer, meine eigenen Melodien zu entwickeln oder eine Melodie nachzubilden, die ich aus einem Film gehört hatte, den ich am Abend zuvor gesehen hatte. Dies führte zu vielen unangenehmen Lektionen, in denen es offensichtlich war, dass ich mein zugewiesenes Material nicht geübt hatte, was wiederum ziemlich frustrierend für meine Lehrer war. Ich habe schließlich den formellen Unterricht abgebrochen.
Du bist ein leidenschaftlicher Komponist. Wie kam es dazu, gab es da einen bestimmten Schlüsselmoment oder wie hat sich das ergeben?
Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es wirklich ein bestimmter Moment war. Nachdem ich den Unterricht abgebrochen hatte, verbrachte ich einige Jahre außerhalb des Klaviers, machte aber immer noch Musik. Am College produzierte ich mit einer Software, die ich durch die Schule bekommen hatte, kleine Hip-Hop-Beats für meine Freunde. Es war nichts zu ernstes, aber ich würde unzählige Stunden damit verbringen, daran zu arbeiten. Gegen Ende der Schule fing ich an, zum Klavier zurückzukehren, und dann fing ich endlich an, Ideen für ein Album aufzunehmen. Ich denke, es hat viel Zeit und Mut gekostet, endlich bereit zu sein, meine Musik zu teilen.

Viele meiner Lieblingskünstler kommen aus Deutschland. Da drüben scheint etwas im Wasser zu sein. Von Beethoven, Brahms und Bach bis hin zu aktuellen Künstlern wie Nils Frahm und Hans Zimmer haben sie alle einen großen Einfluss auf mich gehabt. Nicht nur mit ihrer Musik, sondern auch mit ihrer Einstellung und wie sie Musik und Kunst im Allgemeinen angehen.
Das Album „By The Woods“ habe ich am Jahresende in die Kategorie „Musikalische Referenz der Neoklassik“ gewürdigt. Wenn du so etwas liest, was geht dir da durch den Kopf?
Ich muss sagen, das war schon eine Ehre. Es ist immer schön zu sehen, dass Ihre harte Arbeit geschätzt wird. Vielen Dank!
Das Album wurde von renommierten und bekannten Musiker 2019 neu interpretiert. Wie kam es zu diesem Schritt? Und wie sehr geehrt fühlt man sich, wenn so etwas passiert?
ch brachte die Idee ein paar Monate nach der Veröffentlichung von By The Woods zu Kyle McEvoy (dem Leiter von Sonder House Records). Es war etwas, worüber ich seit der Konzeption von By The Woods nachgedacht hatte. Als ich mit Kyle darüber sprach, liebte er die Idee und die Dinge bewegten sich ziemlich schnell von dort. Ich war unglaublich dankbar, dass so viele großartige Künstler sofort an Bord sprangen. So viele fantastische Neuinterpretationen auf dieser Platte.
Im Mai erscheint das neue Album „The Last Best Place“. Erzähl bitte etwas zur Entstehungsgeschichte. Bitte erzähl, an welchen Stück du sehr lange schleifen musstest und welcher Titel du quasi sofort auf das Notenpapier brachtest?
The Last Best Place war für mich ein ziemlich unerwartetes Album. Nach By The Woods hatte ich nicht vor, eine weitere Solo-Klavieraufnahme zu machen. Ich habe so ein Interesse an elektronischer Musik und Ambient-Musik, dass ich wirklich glaubte, dass dies der Weg sein würde, den ich für meine nächste Platte einschlagen würde. Wenn das gesagt ist, spiele ich immer mein Klavier und schreibe kleine Melodien darauf. Nach einer Weile wurde mir klar, dass ich ziemlich viel Material hatte, mit dem ich sehr zufrieden war, und ich beschloss, mich hinzusetzen und sie alle aufzunehmen. Der Titel The Last Best Place ist eine Hommage an den Spitznamen des Bundesstaates Montana. Mein guter Freund, dem dieses Album gewidmet ist, ist letzten Sommer verstorben und hat es geliebt, dort Zeit zu verbringen. Sein Tod hat mich wirklich dazu veranlasst, das Album zu veröffentlichen. Das Lied Anonymous ist eines, das ich schon gespielt habe, als By The Woods herauskam. Aus irgendeinem Grund konnte ich nie wirklich eine Aufnahme aufnehmen, die mir gefiel, so dass sie bis jetzt nie zu irgendetwas gelangte.
Ich habe das Album jetzt sicher ein paar Mal gehört, für mich ist es - Zeitlose Klavierromantik. Spiegelt das Album auch ein Abbild deiner Seele und Deines Herzen wider? In welchen Umfang dann?
Der Titeltrack, The Last Best Place, wurde für einen meiner Freunde geschrieben, den ich oben erwähnt habe. Ich habe das Lied ursprünglich geschrieben, um meine Nerven von der Angst zu beruhigen, die ich durch seinen Tod hatte. Auch dies hat mich wirklich dazu inspiriert, das ganze Album aufzunehmen. Es ist eine sehr persönliche Aufzeichnung und ich wollte, dass diese Intimität und Sorgfalt in die Aufnahmen übersetzt wird, die es für mich hat. Hoffentlich spüren das auch die Zuhörer.
Ich kann leider keinen Song besonders hervorheben, Alle 11 Stücke sind mit einer tiefen Magie behaftet. Wo nimmst du die Kreativität und Inspiration bei Komponieren dieser Stücke her?
Für diese Platte kamen alle Ideen davon, einfach am Klavier zu sitzen, zu improvisieren und mit kleinen Ideen herumzuspielen. Ich versuche nicht zu viel zu überdenken und achte nur auf mich selbst, wenn ich spiele. Verliere ich mich in der Atmosphäre? Bin ich bewegt von den Noten, die ich schlage? Dies sind Dinge, auf die ich wirklich zu achten versuche. Von da an geht es nur darum, meinen Instinkten zu vertrauen, das Klavier wird den Rest der Arbeit erledigen.

Verrate doch uns, was ist dein persönlicher „Last Best Place“?
Es gibt ein paar Seen um meinen Platz, die ich gerne radle und herumlaufe. Ich würde das als meinen letzten besten Platz betrachten.
Du bist im Genre der modernen Klassik unterwegs – wie wird sich deiner Meinung nach diese entwickeln? Mehr moderne Ansätze oder zurück zu den Wurzeln?
Ohh, dass es schwer zu sagen ist. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass es dieses Rad ist, das sich ständig dreht. Ich denke, es tendiert derzeit zu moderneren Ansätzen, aber in ein paar Jahren wird es wieder zu den Grundlagen zurückkehren.
Wie ist ein John Hayes privat?
Ich neige dazu, privater zu sein. Ich war schon immer am fasziniert von Künstlern, die ein Gefühl von Privatsphäre und Mysteriösität bewahren. Ich denke, das hat eine Qualität für sich.
Was genau kann die Presse, Redakteure oder Journalisten tun, um diese bzw. deine Musik populärer zu machen?
Ich denke, das liegt ganz bei ihnen und wie sie meine Veröffentlichungen abdecken wollen. Am Ende des Tages hoffe ich, dass sie es genug genießen, um freundliche Worte darüber zu schreiben, aber ich würde ihnen auch nie sagen, wie sie ihre Arbeit machen sollen! Hoffentlich spricht die Musik für sich und die Autoren spüren das.
Verfolgst du die Veröffentlichung deiner Kollegen? Welches Album hat dich zuletzt sehr beeindruckt?
Wenn ich ehrlich bin, habe ich mich in letzter Zeit davon abgehalten, zu viel im Genre zu hören. Es gibt einfach so viel zu verfolgen. Ich hoffe das klingt nicht hart! Ich habe gerade festgestellt, dass es mich mehr davon ablenkt, an meiner eigenen Musik und Vision zu arbeiten, je mehr ich darauf achte, was andere Leute tun. Mir ist aufgefallen, dass ich, wenn ich genau folge, mehr Druck verspüre, dies oder jenes zu tun und mich mit anderen Künstlern zu vergleichen, was nicht gesund ist. "Vergleich ist der Mörder der Kreativität", wie man so schön sagt. Ich versuche wirklich, größtenteils auf meiner eigenen Spur zu bleiben. Meine Lieblingsveröffentlichung in diesem Jahr müsste allerdings Blomma von meinen guten Freunden Jacob Pavek und Philip Daniel sein.
