Hello Mattia, how are you doing right now?
Hi, right now I am dedicating to myself a lot, especially through reading. I think we all have to devote time to ourselves, which is not at all obvious, at least it wasn't for me until a few months ago, with the frenzy and dynamism of today's life.
Before we get to music, the world is currently experiencing a crisis. Italy is very affected. How do you deal with the situation?
Italy has been a very important focus. I greatly admired the patriotic brotherhood of my Country, I must say I am surprised! A very strong relationship has been created between artists of all kinds to relieve us and other Italians with our art. I personally experienced the quarantine by letting myself be crossed by all kinds of external influences (which could make you laugh if not understood in the right way haha), as I said with books, CDs, films, TV series.
What do you miss most in these times?
As I think each of us, relationships have been severely contrasted .. so this, I have missed contact with others, friends, family etc.
In addition, I had two concerts and it was really a shame to give it up.
How do you assess the cohesion of musicians and music listeners, is there such a thing?
It certainly exists! I am happy with this question because it is something that is rarely found. I think that after my mom, I find my main support in the fans, in the listeners and it is right that they have their satisfaction, even if small, on our part.

You came to music at the age of 8, please describe the beginnings a bit?
Yes, I started playing officially at the age of 8, although in reality I learned something with my father even before. My father is also a musician and therefore there has always been music in the family, also the presence of the piano in the house fascinated me a lot. While my father played it, he often saw me there following him and then one day we decided to start this path.
Can you still remember your first, own composition? How was this?
Oh yes I remember it well haha it was a piece in D minor for piano and whistle. I created it a few months after I started playing the piano, since then I felt the need to give my own, to tell something .. in this case whistling and accompanying myself with the piano haha.
What was the point of dealing with modern classic?
Talking about modern classical music.. yes and no. It is difficult to define the genre that is and is still developing (in reality Modern Classical music is a term actually described between Impressionist and Contemporary music), anyway the genre we are talking about is a breath of fresh air, full of influences ranging from minimalist classic to electronics, often also suitable as a soundtrack, linked to ambient sonority.
"From that dirty glass" is your new album. Are you excited anyway, or is it already routine for you?
Sure, I'm completely excited.. it's my second CD, there is a lot of me in this project, I opened up a lot, I made myself more vulnerable through it and I focus a lot on this.
The album is timeless and consists of an essence of melancholy. Would you say your whole personal soul is in the work?
Exactly, as I said before, my sensitivity is completely in there.. I hope that this my bestowal will be perceived.
How was working with Mauro Paolo Monopoli, who plays the cello? Why is the instrument important to you for the sound structures?
I know Mauro since always, he was my first friend, our parents were friends even before I was born.. we found each other immediately and he entered my musical idea without problems.
I think the cello is one of the most versatile instruments, and for my project I really needed this .. between melancholy, aggression, fragility and impetuosity.
Do you have a personal favorite on the album? Which song did you have to write long before it was perfect?
It is difficult, very haha but I can tell you that the composition in which I opened mostly my heart, my soul is "At the window, moanful breaths". Instead, the composition to which I dedicated more time is "Obsessive fraying"
What sources of inspiration do you use to write music?
Always different.. but what they have in common is that they start from my "deafening silence": everything I would like to express is silent in order to find its true need and start realizing its essence.
I have been writing about music for almost 10 years, and I noticed that classical music from Italy always impressed me extremely. What do you think are the reasons why modern classic from Italy is so unique?
Do not take my words as a certainty, but what I noticed is that in Italy the feeling of the beauty, of the romantic has never disappeared, despite the advent of contemporary etc.. it will perhaps be for the cultural history that we have in our eyes every day and therefore influences us in this away and characterizes us for this. And people today need this, to disconnect from the automaton that we become in order to return to our humanity
Do you follow the music of your colleagues, if so, which ones have inspired or impressed you?
Sure! Not always but almost every week I listen to the new releases of the musician colleagues, friends or not.
From Italy in particular I am always surprised by Federico Albanese, Ed Carlsen and Marco Caricola. Among my great influences we find Max Richter, Michael Nyman, Johann Johannsson, Yann Tiersen, Joep Beving.
Halfway through the year, have you already identified a personal highlight?
I hope and wish it would be the release of this album ;)
In the end I think there is a right balance for everything

What music does a Mattia Morleo listen to privately?
I secretly love alternative rock music.. in this months in particular David Sylvian, Nick Cave, Thom Yorke.
Which series or movie would you like to have composed the music for?
As a TV series "Dark" first of all, Ben Frost has done an exceptional job. As a movie "Once Upon a Time in America", Ennio Morricone.. no words needed.
You are in the genre of modern classic - how do you think it will develop? More modern approaches or back to the roots?
They are two ways that will go forward in parallel: the beauty of the past will be reused and the new will always be experienced. It is a good time for music, both new and old are going on.
What exactly can the press, editors or journalists do to make them or your music more popular?
In the end I think there is a right balance for everything.. if an artist has talent and desire to express himself, sooner or later he can make himself heard. The only thing I feel like saying on the radio, newspapers etc. is that it would be a better world if we were aiming for talent, purity and not only for gain.. we are all good at doing or talking about what we already know that works.

Hallo, im Moment widme ich viel mich selbst, besonders durch Lesen. Ich denke, wir müssen uns alle Zeit nehmen, was überhaupt nicht offensichtlich ist, zumindest war es das nicht für mich bis vor ein paar Monaten, mit der Raserei und Dynamik des heutigen Lebens.
Bevor wir zur Musik kommen, aktuell erlebt die Welt eine Krise. Italien ist davon hart getroffen. Wie gehst du mit der Situation um?
Italien war ein sehr wichtiger Schwerpunkt. Ich habe die patriotische Bruderschaft meines Landes sehr bewundert, ich muss sagen, ich bin überrascht! Es wurde eine sehr enge Beziehung zwischen Künstlern aller Art geschaffen, um uns und andere Italiener von unserer Kunst zu entlasten. Ich persönlich habe die Quarantäne erlebt, indem ich mich von allen möglichen äußeren Einflüssen (die zum Lachen bringen könnten, wenn man sie nicht richtig versteht, haha) durchkreuzen ließ, wie ich bei Büchern, CDs, Filmen und Fernsehserien sagte.
Was vermisst Du gerade in diesen Zeiten am meisten?
Wie ich denke, jeder von uns, wurden die Beziehungen stark kontrastiert. Daher habe ich den Kontakt mit anderen, Freunden, der Familie usw. verpasst. Außerdem hatte ich zwei Konzerte und es war wirklich eine Schande, es aufzugeben.
Wie beurteilst du den Zusammenhalt von Musikern und Musikhörer, gibt es den denn überhaupt?
Es existiert sicherlich! Ich bin mit dieser Frage sehr glücklich, dass sie einmal gestellt wird. Du bist mit 8 Jahren zur Musik gekommen, beschreibe bitte ein wenig die Anfänge?
Ja, ich habe im Alter von 8 Jahren offiziell angefangen zu spielen, obwohl ich in Wirklichkeit schon vorher etwas mit meinem Vater gelernt habe. Mein Vater ist auch Musiker und deshalb gab es immer Musik in der Familie, auch die Anwesenheit des Klaviers im Haus hat mich sehr fasziniert. Während mein Vater es spielte, sah er mich oft dort folgen und eines Tages beschlossen wir, diesen Weg zu beginnen.
Kannst du dich noch erinnern an deine erste, eigene Komposition? Wie war diese?
Oh ja, ich erinnere mich gut daran, haha, es war ein Stück in d-Moll für Klavier und Pfeife. Ich habe es ein paar Monate nachdem ich angefangen habe Klavier zu spielen erschaffen, seitdem hatte ich das Bedürfnis mein eigenes zu geben, etwas zu erzählen .. in diesem Fall pfeifen und mich mit dem Klavier begleiten.. haha
Was war der Punkt, dich mit moderne Klassik zu befassen?
Apropos moderne klassische Musik .. ja und nein. Es ist schwierig, das Genre zu definieren, das sich entwickelt und noch entwickelt (in Wirklichkeit ist moderne klassische Musik ein Begriff, der tatsächlich zwischen impressionistischer und zeitgenössischer Musik beschrieben wird), trotzdem ist das Genre, über das wir sprechen, ein Hauch frischer Luft, voller Einflüsse von minimalistischer Klassiker der Elektronik, oft auch als Soundtrack geeignet, verbunden mit Ambient Sonority.
„From that dirty glass“ ist dein neues Album. Ist man da trotzdem aufgeregt, oder bereits Routine für dich?
Klar, ich bin total aufgeregt ... es ist meine zweite CD, es gibt vieles von mir in diesem Projekt, ich habe viel von mir preisgegeben, ich habe mich dadurch verletzlicher gemacht und ich konzentriere mich sehr darauf.
Das Album ist zeitlos und besteht aus eine Essenz der Melancholie. Würdest du sagen, in dem Werk steckt deine ganze, persönliche Seele?
Genau, wie ich bereits sagte, ist meine Sensibilität vollständig vorhanden. Ich hoffe, dass dies auch beim Hörer wahrgenommen wird.
Wie war die Arbeit mit Mauro Paolo Monopoli, der das Cello spielt. Warum ist das Instrument für dich wichtig für die Klangstrukturen?
Ich kenne Mauro seit jeher, er war mein erster Freund, unsere Eltern waren Freunde, noch bevor ich geboren wurde. Wir fanden uns sofort und er trat ohne Probleme in meine musikalische Idee ein. Ich denke, das Cello ist eines der vielseitigsten Instrumente, und für mein Projekt brauchte ich das wirklich ... zwischen Melancholie, Aggression, Zerbrechlichkeit und Ungestüm.
Hast du ein persönlichen Favoriten auf dem Album? An welchen Song hast du lange schreiben müssen, bis er perfekt war?
Es ist schwierig, sehr haha, aber ich kann Ihnen sagen, dass die Komposition, in der ich hauptsächlich mein Herz geöffnet habe, und meine Seele im Stück "At the window, moanful breaths"" ist. Stattdessen ist die Komposition, der ich mehr Zeit gewidmet habe, "Obsessive fraying".
Welche Inspirationsquellen benutzt du, um Musik zu schreiben?
Immer andere ... aber was sie gemeinsam haben, ist, dass sie von meiner "ohrenbetäubenden Stille" ausgehen: Alles, was ich ausdrücken möchte, ist still, um sein wahres Bedürfnis zu finden und sein Wesen zu erkennen.
Ich schreibe fast 10 Jahre über Musik, dabei ist mir aufgefallen, dass klassische Musik aus Italien mich immer extrem beeindruckt. Was meinst du sind die Gründe, warum moderne Klassik aus Italien so einzigartig ist?
Nimm meine Worte nicht als Gewissheit, aber ich habe festgestellt, dass in Italien das Gefühl der Schönheit, der Romantik trotz des Aufkommens der Gegenwart usw. nie verschwunden ist. Es wird vielleicht für die Kulturgeschichte sein, in der wir uns befinden unsere Augen jeden Tag und beeinflusst uns daher in dieser Abwesenheit und charakterisiert uns dafür. Und die Menschen von heute brauchen dies, um sich von dem Automaten zu trennen, der wir werden, um zu unserer Menschlichkeit zurückzukehren.
Verfolgst du die Musik deiner Kollegen, wenn ja, welche haben dich inspiriert oder beeindruckt?
Sicher! Nicht immer, aber fast jede Woche höre ich mir die Neuerscheinungen der Musikerkollegen an, Freunde oder nicht.

Du bist im Genre der modernen Klassik unterwegs – wie wird sich deiner Meinung nach diese entwickeln? Mehr moderne Ansätze oder zurück zu den Wurzeln?
Es sind zwei Wege, die parallel voranschreiten: Die Schönheit der Vergangenheit wird wiederverwendet und das Neue wird immer erlebt. Es ist eine gute Zeit für Musik, sowohl neue als auch alte sind im Gange.
Was genau kann die Presse, Redakteure oder Journalisten tun, um diese bzw. deine Musik populärer zu machen?
Am Ende denke ich, dass es für alles eine richtige Balance gibt. Wenn ein Künstler Talent und den Wunsch hat, sich auszudrücken, kann er sich früher oder später Gehör verschaffen. Das einzige, was ich im Radio, in Zeitungen usw. sagen möchte, ist, dass es eine bessere Welt wäre, wenn wir Talent, Reinheit und nicht nur Gewinn anstreben würden. Wir sind alle gut darin, das zu tun oder darüber zu sprechen, was wir bereits wissen das funktioniert.
